Skating Strides raises over $5,500 for breast cancer charities
Feb. 21, 2008
The Maine women's hockey team, through the Women's Hockey East Skating Strides program, was able to raise $5,530 for breast cancer charities over the weekend. The Black Bears hosted Boston College on Saturday, February 16 in the first-ever Skating Strides for breast cancer game held at the university. Fans were able to make contributions through a free-will donation at the door, or by participation in an on-line or silent auction. Items up for bid in the auction included a special set of game-worn Maine hockey jerseys donated by Bangor Savings Bank. The jerseys included a pink Maine logo, pink numbers, and pink Hockey East and Skating Strides logos. Fans could also purchase pink Skating Strides bracelets or a special t-shirt designed for the event. "We're very pleased with the amount of support shown by the community and the university for the event", said women's ice hockey head coach Dan Lichterman. "We were thrilled with the money that was raised and the team was happy we could also help raise awareness for such an important cause." The Black Bears return to action at Alfond Arena on March 1 and 2 to take on Vermont in the final home series this season. Admission to games is free.
