Genevieve Turgeon Claims Defensive Player of the Week

Oct. 6, 2008

Orono, Maine - The University of Maine's senior goaltender Genevieve Turgeon (Lac Beauport, Quebec) was named the Women's Hockey East Pure Hockey Defensive Player of the Week for her performance against the North Dakota Fighting Sioux this past weekend. Turgeon went 1-1 as she made 92 saves and had a .911 save percentage.

The highlight came on Friday evening with a 3-2 win in which Turgeon made 46 saves and had a .958 save percentage. During the final three minutes she staved off a barrage of shots during a North Dakota power play to hold onto the victory.

With the weekend Turgeon reached another milestone in her heralded career, now totaling over 2,000 saves. At the end of last season she became the all-time save leader at Maine and now has a comfortable lead with 2,065. In addition Turgeon has the all-time games played record with 71 and owns the single-season save record with 907.

Turgeon and the Black Bears will return to action next weekend as they travel to Minnesota State - Makato for a two game series. Maine's Dan Lichterman spent four seasons as an assistant with the Mavericks before becoming the Black Bears' head coach last season.
