Women's Hockey Names Captains

Nov. 19, 2008

Orono, Maine - The University of Maine women's ice hockey team named senior Vanessa Vani (St. Catharines, Ontario) captain shortly after the Black Bears 5-3 win over then ranked fifth Boston College. Juniors Amy Stech (Duluth, Minn.) and Lexie Hoffmeyer (Grand Blanc, Mich.) were also named as alternate captains.

"Vanessa has proven to be our leader on and off the ice," said head coach Dan Lichterman. "She has a determination about her in the games and she does whatever it takes to help us succeed. Her work ethic in practice and off the ice has been at a very high level on a consistent basis so far this year and has set the bar high for the rest of the group."

Vani is currently tied for a team-high 10 points on two goals and eight assists. She also has 51 career assists, only four shy of becoming Maine's new all-time assist leader.

Stech is coming off of a great performance against the Eagles, scoring two goals including the game-winner. She currently has six points, with five goals and one assist.

"Amy is one of our hardest workers day in and day out," said Lichterman. "Her passion for the game and our program is unmatched. She is definitely a lead by example kind of kid."

Hoffmeyer has also supplied the Black Bears with an early spark as she is tied for second on the team with nine points on three goals and six assists. Hoffmeyer had two assists in the win over Boston College.

"Lexie has that great competitive fire and isn't afraid to speak her mind," said Lichterman. "Her tenacity in practice makes everyone better for the weekends."

Maine returns to the ice on Tuesday, Nov. 25, to take on the Vermont Catamounts in the Androscoggin Bank Colisee in Lewiston, Maine starting at 7 p.m.
