Women's Soccer Downs Sacred Heart
Aug. 23, 2008 ORONO, Maine--The University of Maine women's soccer team opened the regular season with a victory on Saturday, downing Sacred Heart by the score of 3-0 at Alumni Field. With the win, Maine improved to 1-0 while Sacred Heart fell to 0-1. Maine was led by Laura Martel (Lewiston, Maine) who had her first career hat trick. Maine got on the board a little over six minutes in when Kim Stephenson (Hampden, Maine) headed a ball over two defenders to a racing Martel. Martel pulled away from the defense and placed it to the right of the Sacred Heart goalie. Martel's second goal came a little over three minutes later when Carolyne Nellis (Quebec City, Quebec) shot a rocket that beat the goalie but hit the crossbar. The rebound came straight to Martel who knocked it in for her second goal of the contest. Martel completed the hat trick just before the 20 minute mark when Kelsey Wilson (Gorham, Maine) headed a ball through to Martel who knocked it in to the right of the keeper. Maine goalkeeper Jasmine Phillips (Nepean, Ontario) made three saves, including a fantastic diving save in the second half to preserve the shutout. The shutout extends her school record for career shutouts at the University of Maine to 28. Meghan Reichelt (Selden, N.Y.) made six saves for Sacred Heart. Maine outshot Sacred Heart by a 15-to-four margin. The Black Bears return to action on Friday when they battle UMass at 1 p.m. in South Berwick, Maine.
