Women's Soccer Ties UMass
Aug. 29, 2008
ORONO, Maine--The University of Maine women's soccer team tied the Minutewomen of Massachusetts 0-0 in double overtime Friday at the Marshwood High School Field in South Berwick, Maine. With the tie, Maine goes to 1-0-1 while the Minutewomen go to 0-1-1. The two teams battled back and forth, but both teams played well in their defensive areas and thus scoring chances were limited. Kim Stephenson (Hampden, Maine) had two quality shots on net but UMass goalkeeper Lauren Luckey (Hendersonville, Tenn.) was able to make the saves. The Black Bears' best chance came in the first half when Laura Martel received a pass and was in footrace with a defender next to her going to goal. Luckey went down and secured the ball before Martel could get a shot off. In the second half, with UMass pressuring the Maine goal, Minutewomen midefielder Kelsey Anderson (Saugus, Mass.) took a shot form about 25 yeards out that appeared to be going over Maine goalkeeper Jasmine Phillips' (Nepean, Ontario) head. Phillips dove at a tough angle diagonally to her right and falling back to make a fantastic save and tip the ball to the crossbar. The ball bounced off the bar and Phillips recovered it. The two teams battled through two overtimes, but neither team could notch a goal. For the game, Maine outshot UMass eight-to-six. Phillips ended up with four saves while Luckey had seven. It was the 29th career shutout for Phillips and increased her career shutout record at Maine. The Black Bears return home on Sunday when they battle Rhode Island at 4 p.m.
