Women's Soccer Downs Iona

NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y.--The University of Maine women's soccer team defeated Iona by the score of 1-0 in double overtime Sunday afternoon. With the win, Maine went to 2-0-3 on the season while Iona fell to 0-4. Maine goalie Jasmine Phillips (Nepean, Ontario) recorded her 30th career shutout.Véronique Fleury (Montreal, Quebec) scored in the second overtime to propel the Black Bears to victory. The teams battled through 90 minutes of action with each side recording eight shots. Maine had 13 corner kicks to the Gaels' one during regulation. In the second overtime, Fleury notched her first goal of the season on an assist from Carolyne Nellis (Quebec City, Quebec) to give Maine the win. Phillips had four saves for the Black Bears while Iona goalkeeper Suzanne Baldissard (Kinnelon, N.J.) made six saves. The Black Bears return home on Saturday to play Bryant at 1 p.m.
