Women's Soccer Ties Bryant 1-1

Sept. 13, 2008

Box Score

ORONO, Maine--The University of Maine women's soccer team tied the Bryant University Bulldogs 1-1 in double overtime on Saturday afternoon at Alumni Field. With the tie, Maine remains undefeated and goes to 2-0-4 on the season while Bryant went to 1-4-1. Maine was led by senior captain Christine LaBelle (Nepean, Ontario) who notched her second goal of the season.

In the first half, Sarah Donovan (Storrs, Conn.) hit a shot off a Steph Del Mistro (East Williston, N.Y.) pass that was just out of reach of Maine's Jasmine Phillips (Nepean, Ontario) to give the Bulldogs the lead five minutes into the game.

The Black Bears battled back and finally broke through in the 31st minute. Véronique Fleury (Montreal, Quebec) had the ball at the left corner of the 18-yard box and hit a great cross that was about two feet off the ground and fast. LaBelle made a great shot and half-scissored the ball that rocketed by Bryant goalie Katie Mitchell (Deer Park, N.Y.)

The two teams continued to battle in the second half, and Bryant had an opportunity to take the lead on a corner kick when the ball went straight to a Bryant player in front of the net, but Phillips made an excellent save to keep the game a tie.

With four minutes remaining, Maine appeared to take the lead when Kelsey Wilson (Gorham, Maine) hit a fantastic cross to Kim Stephenson (Hampden, Maine), and Stephenson burried it. However, Stephenson was barely offside and the goal was disallowed.

The teams battled through two extra sessions, but no one could scored.

For the game, Maine was outshot nine-to-seven. Phillips made four saves while Mitchell made three for the Bulldogs.

The Black Bears return to action on Thursday when they host Dartmouth at 3 p.m.
