Hathorn Leads Women's Soccer Past Marist
Sept. 18, 2005 POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y.-- Senior Heather Hathorn (Scarborough, Maine) scored a pair of goals to lead the University of Maine women's soccer to a 3-0 win over Marist on Sunday afternoon in Poughkeepsie, N.Y. The Black Bears improve to 5-3 on the season and extend their winning streak to three games. Marist falls to 1-6 on the campaign. Maureen McHugh (Scarborough, Maine) notched the game-winner for Maine just 7:26 into the game when she beat Marist keeper Caitlin Nazarechuk with a shot to the right side. It was the first goal of the season for McHugh. Maine added to its lead at 24:57 when Hathorn scored off a penalty kick. It was the first penalty kick for the Black Bears this season. Hathorn notched her second goal of the game at 59:47 off a corner kick from Marie-Andree Canuel (St.-Jean-Chrysostome, Quebec). For Hathorn, it was her team-leading fourth goal of the season. Maine keeper Jasmine Phillips (Nepean, Ontario) made one save in goal to record her third shutout of the season. Phillips has yet to allow a goal in five career games. She improves to 3-0-0 on the season. Nazarechuk made six saves in goal for Marist in 76:10. She allowed all three goals. Anna Case played the final 13:50 and did not record a save. Maine outshot Marist 12-7 in the game. The Black Bears return to action on Friday, September 23 when they travel to Rhode Island for a 7:00 p.m. game. -U-M-
