Sept. 18, 2008
ORONO, Maine--The University of Maine women's soccer team fell in double overtime to Dartmouth by the score of 2-1 at Alumni Field on Thursday afternoon. The Black Bears suffered their first loss and fell to 2-1-4 on the season while Dartmouth is now 2-2. Hailey Blackburn (York, Maine) scored for Maine. In the first half, the Black Bears took the lead in the 37th minute. Cristina Di Ielsi (Laval, Quebec) placed a great corner kick on the head of freshman Carolyne Nellis (Quebec City, Quebec). Nellis flicked it to Blackburn who headed it in for her first goal of the season. Maine caught a tough break with less than a minute to go in the first half when Dartmouth had a corner kick go in the net off a Maine defender. In the second half, Maine hung tough with the Big Green, and sent the game into overtime. With less than a minute to go in the second overtime, Dartmouth midfielder Becky Poskin (Leawood, Kan.) hit a tough shot that was just out of reach of Maine goalkeeper Jasmine Phillips and went into the right side of the net. Phillips played very well in net, making five saves. Dartmouth keeper Laurel Peak (Redding, Conn.) made one save for the Big Green. The Black Bears return to action on Sunday when they travel to Cornell for a 1 p.m. game.
