Box Score

ORONO, Maine - The University of Maine women's soccer team opened its 2007 home schedule in impressive fashion on Friday afternoon with a 5-0 blanking of Holy Cross at Alumni Field in Orono. The Black Bears ran their unbeaten streak to three games (2-0-1) and improved their overall record to 2-3-2 on the season. The Crusaders fell to 2-5.

Maine got a pair of goals from Laura Martel and a tally each from Anjelica Hodgson, Christine LaBelle and Cari Gill. The Black Bears outshot Holy Cross 29-5, including a 13-1 advantage in the first period. Maine's last eight wins at Alumni Field have been via shutouts.

The Black Bears got the goal scoring started at the 4:30 mark of the first period on a volley into the left side of the net by Hodgson from Kim Stephenson. A little over eight minutes later the Black Bears took a 2-0 lead on Martel's first goal which beat HC goalkeeper Mary Ferketic into the bottom right corner of the net. Laura Harper assisted on the goal. Gill staked Maine to a 3-0 lead -- which it would take into the locker room at halftime -- at the 35:20 mark when she deflected a header into the net, which was assisted by Hailey Blackburn.

Maine scored twice in the second period as it continued to keep the majority of play in Holy Cross' zone. LaBelle scored at the 64:06 mark on an unassisted breakaway, while Martel capped the scoring with a header off a cross pass from Veronique Fleury at the 70:11 mark. Maine outshot the Crusaders 16-4 in the final period.

Jasmine Phillips, who was named the America East Player of the Week this past Monday, started in goal for Maine and posted her third-straight shutout. However, she did not have a save as Holy Cross' early shots went wide of the net. It marked the 26th time in the last 27 games that she has yielded a goal or less. Jaymie Coulston replaced Phillips at the 73:05 mark in the contest and made a pair of saves late.

The Black Bears return to action on Tuesday when they travel to Providence, R.I., to face Brown at 7 p.m.
