Women's Soccer Falls to Rhode Island 2-1
Sept. 23, 2005 KINGSTON, R.I.-- The University of Maine women's soccer team dropped a 2-1 decision to Rhode Island on Friday night in Kingston, R.I. The Black Bears fall to 5-4 on the season with the loss and snap their three-game winning streak. The Rams improve to 4-4 on the campaign. Marie-Andree Canuel (St.-Jean-Chrysostome, Quebec) gave Maine a 1-0 lead at 44:32 when she scored after a deflection on a corner kick. For Canuel, it was her second goal of the season. The Black Bears took the 1-0 lead into the half. The Rams tied the score at 1-1 when Melanie Kasparek scored her seventh goal of the season at 52:26 from Debra Nelson off a cross from the far left side. Megan Kasparek notched the game-winner for URI at 79:55 when she took a pass from Melanie Kasparek and beat Maine keeper Tanya Adorno (Farmington, Conn.). The Rams tried to add to their lead at 86:57 when Melanie Kasparek was awarded a penalty kick, but Adorno was able to come up big and make the save to keep the deficit at one goal. Maine was unable to notch the game-winner and fell 2-1. Rhode Island held a 22-14 edge in shots. Maine keeper Adorno made nine save in goal for the Black Bears and falls to 2-4 on the season. Ria Carroll made eight saves for the Rams. The Black Bears return to action on Thursday, September 29 when they host Boston University for their first America East Conference game of the season. The game will start at 3:00 p.m. at Alumni Field in Orono.
