Women's Soccer Falls at 10th Ranked Boston University
Sept. 28, 2006 BOSTON, Mass.-- The University of Maine women's soccer team, ranked 22nd in the latest NSCAA National Poll, dropped a 1-0 decision to 10th ranked Boston University on Thursday night at Nickerson Field in Boston, Mass. It was the first loss of the season for the Black Bears, who fall to 8-1-1 on the season, 0-1-0 in America East play. The loss snapped Maine's seven game winning streak. Boston University improves to 9-2-1 on the season and 2-0-0 in America East play. "It was a typical Maine vs. Boston University game," said Maine head coach Scott Atherley. "Both team fought hard with very few quality scoring chances. They capitalized on their chance. I am pleased with the effort of our team. This game will go far in providing experience for the playoffs." The two teams played through a scoreless first half. The Terriers got on the board at 71:23 when Farrell McClernon scored her fifth goal of the season from Lauren Erwin. McClernon took a cross from the right side and beat a defender and placed the ball into the right side of the goal. The goal broke a sting of 451:63 scoreless minutes by Maine keeper Jasmine Phillips (Nepean, Ontario). Phillips falls to 8-1-1 on the season. She made two saves in the game. It was just the second goal that Maine has allowed in its last eight games. Boston University, which recorded a win over third ranked Santa Clara earlier this season, now has a 17 game unbeaten streak on Nickerson Field. Stephanie Dwyer made one save in goal for the Terriers. Maine returns to action on Sunday, October 1 when it hosts New Hampshire at 12:00 noon at Alumni Field in Orono, Maine.
