Sept. 30, 2007
ALBANY, N.Y. - The University of Maine women's soccer team opened the America East portion of its 2007 schedule on Sunday with a successful 4-0 victory over Albany. The victory ran Maine's record to 3-4-2 on the season and 1-0 in the league. The Great Danes dipped to 3-4-3 overall and 0-1 in conference play. Laura Martel scored two goals for Maine, marking the second time in the last three games she has scored a pair of goals in a contest. Laura Harper and Veronique Fleury each added a tally for the Black Bears, who improved to 3-1-1 in their last five games. Fleury also added an assist, while Kim Stephenson and Cari Gill had Maine's other helpers. The Black Bears scored twice in each of the two periods. Harper got the scoring started for Maine at the 7:08 mark of the first period with help from Fleury. Harper took a pass from Fleury and slipped a kick past the Albany goalkeeper into the right back post of the net for a 1-0 Black Bear advantage. Martel tallied Maine's second goal for a 2-0 edge at the 28:50 mark of the period. Kim Stephenson got the scoring play started when she took a free kick from the left of the box. Martel was able to time the kick, out-leap the competition and head the ball into the net. The Black Bears had 10 shots in the first period, while limiting the Great Danes to just four.
Maine kept up the offensive intensity in the second period by also registering 10 shots. The Black Bears' defensive play was just as strong as they held Albany to just three shots. Maine took a 3-0 lead at the 65:43 mark on Martel's second goal of the contest, which was unassisted. She notched the tally after she dribbled in and beat the goalkeeper to the lower right. Maine capped its scoring at the 87:25 mark on a goal by Fleury with the assist coming from Gill. Fleury's score came off a chip shot to the far post.
Jasmine Phillips got the win in goal for Maine as she only needed to make two saves in the contest. It marked the fourth time in the last five games she has held the opposition without a goal. The Black Bears return to action next Sunday, Oct. 7, when they play host to UMBC at 11 a.m., at Alumni Field in Orono. Admission is free for all home soccer games played at Alumni Field. |
