Martel Leads Maine Women's Soccer Past New Hampshire
Oct. 1, 2006
ORONO, Maine-- Laura Martel (Lewiston, Maine) scored the lone goal of the game in the 86th minute to lead the 22nd ranked University of Maine women's soccer team past New Hampshire 1-0 on a cool, windy day at Alumni Field in Orono, Maine. The Black Bears improve to 9-1-1 on the season and 1-1-0 in America East play. New Hampshire falls to 3-7-0 on the campaign and 1-2-0 in conference play. The two teams played through a scoreless first half. Maine nearly broke the deadlock around the 34th minute mark when Hailey Blackburn (York, Maine) had a shot from 10-yards out the hit the post. Maine has not allowed a first half goal all season. With the game looking as it might head to overtime, Véronique Fleury (Montreal, Quebec) fed Martel who beat a defender and broke in alone on UNH keeper Lynn Gugliuzza. Martel's shot easily went over the head of Gugliuzza and into the top right hand corner of the goal at 85:05. For Martel, it was her third goal of the season and second game-winner. Maine held an 18-7 advantage in shots in the game. Maine keeper Jasmine Phillips (Nepean, Ontario) made one save and improves to 9-1-1 on the season. She records her seventh shutout of the season. Gugliuzza made six saves in goal for the Wildcats. The Black Bears return to action on Thursday, October 5 when they travel to Stony Brook for a noon game. -U-M-
