Oct. 5, 2006
STONY BROOK, N.Y.-- Cristina Di Ielsi (Laval, Quebec) scored with just one second remaining in double overtime to lead the University of Maine women's soccer team to a 2-1 victory over Stony Brook on Thursday afternoon in Stony Brook, N.Y. The 23rd ranked Black Bears improve to 10-1-1 on the season and 2-1 in America East play. The Seawolves fall to 7-5-1 overall and 2-2 in conference play. With the game looking like it would end in a tie, Maine was awarded a throw in with 10 seconds remaining in the contest. Di Ielsi was able to possess the ball and her shot beat Stony Brook keeper Marisa Viola. For Di Ielsi, it was her second goal of the season and first game-winner. Maine opened the scoring at 31:26. Laura Harper (Nepean, Ontario) had a shot in the box that Viola was able to save. Harper was able to collect her own rebound and fired a shot that deflected off the left post. This time, Marie-Michele Bouchard (Beauport, Quebec) was able to control the rebound and blasted a shot from five-yards out past Viola and into the goal. For Bouchard, it was her first career goal. Maine took the 1-0 lead into halftime. The Seawolves were quick to tie the game in the second half. Stony Brook's Brooke Barbuto fed the ball past the Maine defense to Kate Collins at the top of the 18-yard box. Collins had her shot from the left side deflect off Maine keeper Jasmine Phillips (Nepean, Ontario) and into the back of the goal. The game remained tied until Di Ielsi ended it at 109:59. Maine nearly ended the game in regulation as Marie-Andree Canuel (St.-Jean-Chrysostome) had a header hit the cross bar in the final minute of regulation. Maine outshot Stony Brook 16-14 in the game. Phillips made five saves in goal for the Black Bears and improves to 10-1-1 on the season. Viola stopped seven shots for the Seawolves.
The Black Bears now return home and will play three of their next four games at home. Maine begins the home stand when it hosts Hartford on Sunday, October 8 at 1:00 p.m. at Alumni Field in Orono. -U-M- |
