Women's Soccer Downs UMBC in Overtime 1-0

ORONO, Maine - The University of Maine women's soccer team won for the fourth time in its last six games on Sunday with a 1-0 overtime victory over UMBC at Alumni Field in Orono. Maine improved to 4-4-2 on the season and 2-0 in America East. The Retrievers dipped to 1-9-2 and 0-3 in the league. The Black Bears are now 4-1-1 in their last six games.

The game-winning goal was scored at the 95:36 mark in the first overtime. The goal came off a corner kick by Kim Stephenson, who blasted the ball from the left corner towards the net. Several Black Bears converged on the goal, but UMBC goalkeeper Christine Bacinski jumped up before them to attempt to snatch the ball out of the air. However, the ball deflected off her hand and into the net for the game-winner. The goal was credited to Stephenson.

Maine outshot UMBC 23-4 in the contest, including 14 shots in the first period alone. Bacinski was strong in net for UMBC as she made seven saves in the opening stanza and eight overall. Maine's defense was solid throughout the entire contest as Black Bear goalkeeper Jasmine Phillips needed to make just one save in the contest, which came in the first period. The Retrievers managed just one shot in the first period and only three in the second. Phillips has now allowed a goal or less in 28 of her last 30 contests dating back to last season.

All four of Maine's wins this season have come via shutout. The Black Bears have outscored the opposition 13-0 in their four wins this season. In Maine's last six games, it has outscored the opposition 13-2.

Maine returns to action on Thursday when it plays host to Boston University at 3 p.m., at Alumni Field. Admission for all home contests at Alumni Field is free.
