Women's Soccer Falls to Hartford

ORONO, Maine-- Hartford's Meagan Riemer scored the lone goal of the game 6:46 into overtime to lead the Hawks to a 1-0 victory over the 23rd ranked University of Maine in women's soccer action on Sunday afternoon at Alumni Field in Orono. The Black Bears fall to 10-2-1 overall and 2-2-0 in America East play, while the Hawks improve to 6-8-0 on the season and 4-0-0 in America East play.

Scoring chances were few and far between early in the game. Neither team had a decent scoring chance in the first half. Both teams has several scoring chances in the second half, but each time, the goalkeepers kept the game scoreless.

Hartford had a chance early in first half when Brittany Black had a shot, but Maine keeper Jasmine Phillips was able to make a diving save.

Maine's best scoring chance came midway through the second half when Natalie Berry (Saco, Maine) had a shot from within the box, but Hartford keeper Liz Cook was able to make the save. Kim Stephenson (Hampden, Maine) had a follow up shot for the Black Bears, but the game would remain scoreless.

In overtime, Hartford played the ball into the box with a pass from Sara Flowers to Brittany Black. Black was able to find Meagan Riemer alone on the left side of the goal box. Riemer beat Maine keeper Jasmine Phillips with a shot the found the back left corner of the goal. For Riemer, it was her sixth goal of the season and second game-winner.

Maine held a 17-8 advantage in shots in the game, including outshooting Hartford 10-5 in the second half.

Phillips made three saves in goal and falls to 10-2-1 on the season. Liz Cook made five saves for the Hawks and improves to 6-8-0.

The Black Bears return to action on Thursday, October 12 when they host Albany at 3:00 p.m. at Alumni Field in Orono, Maine.
