Women's Soccer Shuts Out Boston University 1-0
Oct. 10, 2004 BOSTON, MASS- University of Maine forward Erin Corey (Winslow, Maine) scored the game's only goal in the 61st minute of action and it stood up as the Black Bear women's soccer team blanked the Boston University Terriers, 1-0, in an America East match on Sunday, Oct. 10. Maine improves to 8-4-1 on the season and 2-2 in America East play, while Boston University falls to 10-3-1 and 2-2 in conference play. The Black Bears scored the only goal when Corey collected a loose ball in the B.U. box and slipped the ball into the lower corner of the net from six yards out. The shot beat a leaping Terrier keeper Christina Reuter. This was a rematch of last year's America East Tournament title match that ended in a 0-0 double overtime tie. Because a winner had to be determined for the conference's automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament, the match had to be decided by penalty kicks. After the first session ended in a tie, the game went to a second session. Here, the Terriers were victorious and earned the bid to the NCAAs. Thus, in the last 200 minutes of soccer played at Nickerson Field between the Terriers and Black Bears, there has been just one goal scored. Boston University outshot Maine 10-2 in the game, but Maine keeper Tanya Adorno (Farmington, Conn.) stopped everything that she faced. She improves to 6-4-1 on the season. The shutout was the sixth of the season for Adorno and 16th of her career, leaving her one shutout shy of tying the UMaine record for career shutouts of 17 set by Naomi Welsh (1999-2002). Stephanie Dreyer played the first half of the game for the Terriers, while Christina Reuter saw action in the second half, allowing the lone goal of the game. The Black Bears return to action on Friday, October 15 when they host Hartford at 2:30 p.m. For additional information on women's soccer or Maine athletics visit www.GoBlackBears.com.
