Women's Soccer Falls to Binghamton 1-0

Oct. 16, 2005

Box Score

ORONO, Maine-- The University of Maine women's soccer team dropped a hard-fought 1-0 decision to Binghamton University on Sunday afternoon at a rainy, cold Alumni Field in Orono. The Black Bears fall to 9-5-1 on the season and 4-1-1 in America East play. The Bearcats improve to 8-6-2 overall and 4-2-0 in conference play. The loss snapped Maine's four-game winning streak.

The two teams traded chances early in the first half. Binghamton struck first with just 13 seconds remaining in the first half. The Bearcats were awarded a corner kick taken by Kelly Sanders. Sanders served the ball into the box into traffic in front of Maine keeper Jasmine Phillips (Nepean, Ontario). Both teams tried to control the ball before Danielle White was able to get a foot on the ball, which ricocheted off a player and past Phillips.

Maine battled hard in the second half and controlled play the majority of the half. The Black Bears had several great changes, but each time the Binghamton defense came up big.

With just over 12 minutes remaining, Erin Corey (Winslow, Maine) had a shot, but Bearcat defender Katie Kerrigan was able to block the shot. With just over five minutes to play, Linda Consolante (Beaconsfield, Quebec) had a shot go narrowly over the crossbar.

Maine outshot Binghamton 25-8 in the game. Maine keeper Phillips made three save and falls to 5-1-1 on the season. She allowed her first career goal in nine career games. Kristie Bowers made 13 saves in goal for the Bearcats and improves to 8-5-2 on the season.

The Black Bears return to action on Thursday, October 20 when they travel to Vermont for a game with the Catamounts. Maine returns home on Sunday, October 23 when they host UMBC in the final game of the regular season. Before the game, Maine will honor its seniors.
