Canuel Goal Lifts Maine Past Vermont
Oct. 19, 2006 ORONO, Maine--Marie-Andree Canuel (St.-Jean-Chrysostome, Quebec) scored the game-winning goal on a penalty kick to lead the University of Maine women's soccer team past the University of Vermont on Thursday afternoon at Alumni Field in Orono, Maine. The Black Bears improve to 12-3-1 on the season and 4-3 in America East play. The 12 wins on the season ranks third most in a single season in Maine women's soccer history. The two teams played through a scoreless first half. The Black Bears held a 9-2 edge on shots in the first half. In the 58th minute, Maine's Laura Harper (Nepean, Ontario) broke in alone on Vermont keeper Eliza Bradley. Harper attempted to go around Bradley and was tripped in the box and Maine was awarded a penalty kick. Canuel took the kick and beat Bradley for what would turn out to be the game's lone goal. For Canuel, it was her third goal of the season. Maine outshot Vermont 15-9 in the game. The Catamounts fall to 4-9-3 overall, 2-3-2 in conference play. Jasmine Phillips (Nepean, Ontario) made two saves in goal and improves to 12-3-1 on the season. She records her ninth shutout of the season. Her 12 wins this season ties the school record for wins in a season by a keeper set in 2003 by Tanya Adorno. Bradley made six saves in goal for Vermont. She falls to 3-8-3 on the season. Prior to the game, Maine honored seniors McKayla Bell (Waterford, Maine), Brittany Saisselin (Avon, Conn.), Natalie Berry (Saco, Maine) and Canuel.
