Women's Soccer Ties Vermont

ORONO, Maine--The University of Maine women's soccer team tied the University of Vermont 1-1 on Sunday afternoon at Alumni field. Maine is now 5-4-6 overall and 2-2-2 in America East play while Vermont goes to 3-12-1 and 1-4-1 in league play. Maine was led by Carolyne Nellis (Quebec City, Quebec) who notched her second goal of the season.

Maine dominated play from the first whistle, outshooting Vermont 10-to-four in the first half. The Black Bears got on the board in the 32nd minute when Kelsey Wilson (Gorham, Maine) slid the ball from left to right at the six-yard line and Nellis buried it to give Maine the lead. The Black Bears continued to dominate, but could not put another one in during the first half.

In the second half, Maine outshot Vermont 11-to-two, but could not quite put one in the net. In the 66th minute, Vermont's Samantha Ciaravino (Burke, Va.) hit a cross that was headed in by Carson Laderoute (Rutland, Vt.).

With 10 minutes left in the second half, Kim Stephenson (Hampden, Maine) hit a rocket that Vermont goalie Eliza Bradley (Charlotte, Vt.) made diving save on to keep the game tied at one.

Maine kept pressuring, but could not notch the game winner through two overtimes.

Maine outshot Vermont 25-to-seven for the match. The Black Bears had 10 corner kicks to the Catamounts' one.

Jasmine Phillips (Nepean, Ontario) made three saves on net for Maine while Bradley made 11 saves in net for the Catamounts.

The Black Bears return to action on Thursday when they battle New Hampshire at 3 p.m. The game will be Senior Day for Phillips, Stephenson and Christine LaBelle (Nepean, Ontario).
