Women's Soccer Downs Vermont 2-0

BURLINGTON, Vt.--The University of Maine women's soccer team shut out Vermont 2-0 on Thursday afternoon in Burlington, Vt. The Black Bears improve to 10-5-1 on the season and 5-1-1 in America East play. Vermont falls to 8-7-1 overall and 4-2-1 in conference play. It was the eighth shutout of the season for the Black Bears.

The win was the 100th for University of Maine head coach Scott Atherley. He won 43 games as head coach of the Maine men's program and has 57 wins as head coach of the Maine women's team.

Maine dominated the first half, outshooting the Catamounts 11-3. The Black Bears got on the board at 26:18 when Heather Hathorn (Scarborough, Maine) collected a pass from Erin Corey (Winslow, Maine) and shot a low shot to the far corner of the goal. For Hathorn, it was her sixth goal of the season.

The Black Bears added an insurance goal at 57:35. Laura Harper (Ottawa, Ontario) had the initial shot. The rebound came right to Cory who headed the ball past Catamount keeper Laura Kissock for her seventh goal of the season.

Maine outshot Vermont 14-9 in the game. Black Bear keeper Jasmine Phillips (Nepean, Ontario) stopped three shots in goal to record her sixth shutout of the season. She improve to 6-1-1. Kissock made seven saves in goal for the Catamounts.

The Black Bears return to action on Sunday, October 23 when they play UMBC in the regular season finale at Alumni Field in Orono starting at 12:00 noon. Before the game, Maine will honor its seven seniors.
