Hathorn, Adorno Lead Maine Past UMBC 2-0 on Senior Day

ORONO, Maine. -- Heather Hathorn (Scarborough, Maine) tallied her seventh goal of the season, while Tanya Adorno (Farmington, Conn.) recorded her third shutout to lead the University of Maine women's soccer team past UMBC 2-0 on a cold, wet afternoon in Orono, Maine. With the win, the Black Bears finish second in the America East regular season standings and will receive a bye in the first round of the upcoming America East Tournament. The Black Bears improve to 11-5-1 on the season and 6-1-1 in America East play. UMBC falls to 9-8-1, 3-4-1 in conference play.

Maine got on the board when Brittany Saisselin (Avon, Conn.) fed Heather Hathorn who was near the 15-yard mark. Hathorn got away a clean shot that beat UMBC keeper Catie Bukowski at 7:55. For Hathorn, it was her seventh goal of the season.

Maine added to its lead late in the first half. Laura Harper (Ottawa, Ontario) beat the UMBC defense and broke in alone on Bukowski. Harper beat Bukowski for her fourth goal of the season at 38:26.

Neither team was able to find the back of the net in the second half of a game that was played with wind chills in the upper 20's and a steady rain. Maine held a 18-13 advantage in shots in the game.

Maine keeper Tanya Adorno made four saves in goal. She improve to 5-4 on the season. Adorno recorded her third shutout of the season and 23rd of her career. Bukowski made one save in 45 minutes of play for the Retrievers. Christine Bacinski played the second half for UMBC and made five saves.

 

 

The game was the final regular season home game for Maine seniors Angela Clark (Canandaigua, N.Y.), Linda Consolante (Beaconsfield, Quebec), Erin Corey (Winslow, Maine), Maureen McHugh (Scarborough, Maine), Elise Tebbetts (Waterville, Maine), Adorno and Hathorn, who were all honored prior to the game.

The Black Bears return to action on Sunday, October 30 at 2:30 p.m. at Boston University in the America East Tournament semifinals. Maine will play the winner of the Binghamton vs. UMBC matchup which will take place on Friday afternoon.
