Women's Soccer Defeats New Hampshire, Gains Playoff Berth

Oct. 23, 2008

ORONO, Maine--The University of Maine women's soccer defeated New Hampshire by the score of 1-0 on Thursday afternoon at Alumni Field. With the win, the Black Bears improve to 6-4-6 on the season and 3-2-2 in America East while New Hampshire falls to 6-10-1 and 5-3 in conference play. The win clinched an America East playoff berth for the Black Bears. Maine was led by senior captain Christine LaBelle (Nepean, Ontario) who notched her fifth goal of the season on Senior Day.

LaBelle notched the game-winner in the 32nd minute when she took a shot from 25 yards out and put it in the top-left corner where no goalie could have saved it. The Black Bears continued to pressure, outshooting the Wildcats 9-to-2 in the first 45 minutes.

In the second half, Maine controlled the flow of the game and played stellar defense to preserve the victory.

The Black Bears' back field of Cristina Di Ielsi (Laval, Quebec), Anjelica Hodgson (Nepean, Ontario), Kaitlyn MacIsaac (Bedford, Nova Scotia), Hailey Blackburn (York, Maine) and Sady Tobin (Paul Smiths,N.Y.) allowed only three shots on net that goalie Jasmine Phillips (Nepean, Ontario) had to save for her 35th career shutout.

Nikki Golding (Milton, Mass.) and Ally Yost (Langhorne, Pa.) combined to make five saves in net for the Wildcats.

The game was Senior Day for captains LaBelle, Phillips and Kim Stephenson (Hampden, Maine). Since the three have been together, they have led the Black Bears to a 37-22-13 record, and four consecutive America East playoff berths.
