Women's Soccer Falls at Stony Brook

STONY BROOK, N.Y. -- The University of Maine women's soccer team lost its regular season finale 5-0 at Stony Brook on Sunday afternoon. Maine falls to 6-5-6 on the season and 3-3-2 in America East play. Stony Brook improves to 10-7 overall and 6-2 in conference action. Stony Brook took an early 1-0 lead when Brooke Barbuto found Colleen McKenna just 5:17 into the game. McKenna was able to beat Maine keeper Jasmine Phillips (Nepean, Ontario) for her seventh goal of the season. The Seawolves added to their lead at 18:25. This time, Barbuto found Kate Collins who beat Phillips. Stony Brook took the 2-0 lead into intermission. The Seawolves had a slim 5-4 edge in shots in the first half. The Seawolves made it 3-0 when Barbuto converted a penalty kick at 51:35. Kate Collins scored her second of the afternoon at 81:29 from McKenna. McKenna notched her eighth goal of the season from Kelly Grant at 83:54 to cap the scoring for the Seawolves. Maine held a 9-7 edge in shots for the second half and outshot Stony Brook 13-12 in the game. The Black Bears were never able to beat Seawolves keeper Marisa Viola, who stopped all nine shots that she faced. Phillips made three saves and she falls to 6-5-6 on the season. Christine LaBelle (Nepean, Ontario) led Maine with four shots, including three on goal. The Black Bears continue their season on Thursday, Oct. 30 when they travel to either New Hampshire or Hartford in a quarterfinal match in the America East playoffs.
