Canuel, Harper Lead Maine Past Vermont in AE Quarterfinals
Oct. 27, 2006 WEST HARTFORD, Conn.- The University of Maine women's soccer team won a school record 14th game on Friday evening with a 2-0 victory over Vermont in the America East quarterfinals in West Hartford, Conn. The Black Bears improve to 14-3-1 on the season. Vermont falls to 5-9-3 on the campaign. Maine and Vermont played a scoreless first half. The Black Bears got on the board in the 63rd minute when Laura Harper (Nepean, Ontario) netted her team-leading 11th goal of the season from Marie-Andree Canuel (St.-Jean-Chrysostome, Quebec). Harper beat Vermont keeper Eliza Bradley with a shot that went to the lower right-hand corner of the goal. The Black Bears added to their lead less than 10 minutes later. Canuel beat Bradley with a header off a corner kick at 71:03. Marie-Michele Bouchard (Beauport, Quebec) picked up an assist on the goal. For Canuel, it was her fourth goal of the season. Jasmine Phillips (Nepean, Ontario) made one save in goal and improves to 14-3-1 on the season. She records her 11th shutout of the season, setting the Maine record for single season shutouts. She breaks the mark set by Tanya Adorno who recorded 10 shutouts in both 2003 and 2004. Bradley made six saves for Vermont. Maine held a commanding 16-3 advantage in shots in the game. The Black Bears return to action in the America East semifinals on Sunday, October 29 at 1:00 p.m. when they face Boston University in West Hartford, Conn.
