Harper Penalty Kick Leads Maine Past Stony Brook

ORONO, Maine -- The University of Maine women's soccer team downed Stony Brook 1-0 on Sunday afternoon at Alumni Field in Orono. Maine improves to 6-7-3 on the season and 4-3-1 in America East play. Stony Brook falls to 7-4-5 overall and 4-2-2 in conference play. The two teams played through a scoreless first half with Maine holding a 5-2 edge in shots. Maine finally got on the board at 75:59 when Laura Harper (Nepean, Ontario) was fouled in the penalty area. Maine was awarded a penalty kick and Harper beat Stony Brook keeper Marisa Viola with a shot to the lower right corner. For Harper, it was her fourth goal of the season. Maine keeper Jasmine Phillips (Nepean, Ontario) did the rest as she stopped four shots to earn her sixth shutout of the season. She improves to 6-7-3 on the campaign. Viola made four saves in goal for the Seawolves. Maine finished with an 11-7 edge in shots. Before the game Maine honored seniors Harper and Jordon Pekrul (Burlington, Ontario).
