Oct. 30, 2008
HARTFORD, Conn.--The University of Maine women's soccer team defeated Hartford on penalty kicks 5-4 after a 1-1 tie to advance to the America East semi-finals. Maine goes to 6-5-7 on the year while Hartford finishes at 8-5-5. The Black Bears were led by Jasmine Phillips (Nepean, Ontario) who made a diving save in penalty kicks and made the final kick to give Maine the victory. In the first half, Hartford took the lead in the 34th minute when Kellie Leyland took a shot in the middle of the box that beat Phillips. In the second half, Carolyne Nellis (Quebec City, Quebec) tied the game in the 50th minute when she had the ball in the middle of the box and knocked one into the open net from approximately eight yards out. The two teams battled through two overtime periods before going to penalty kicks. After both teams made their first kicks, Phillips was able to make a diving save to the right post that proved to be the difference. The teams traded kicks and Phillips sealed it when she beat Hartford goalie Lauren Brodeur. Maine was outshot 7-to-5, but both teams had three shots on net. Phillips ended up with two saves in the game as did Brodeur. The Black Bears continue in the America East Tournament when they travel to Boston University on Sunday for a 1 p.m. semi-final showdown.
