Women's Soccer Falls to Stony Brook in America East Quarterfinals

Nov. 1, 2007

Box Score

STONY BROOK, N.Y. - The University of Maine women's soccer team dropped a 2-1 decision to Stony Brook on Thursday night in the America East Quarterfinals. The Black Bears end their season with a record of 6-8-3 and 4-3-1 in America East.

Brooke Barbuto opened up the scoring in the match at the 19:29 mark when she placed a shot into the lower right corner of the net from right in the middle of the 18-yard box. But Maine got even at 21:24 when Laura Martel took a shot from the penalty area and put it right past Seawolves goalkeeper Marisa Viola in the lower left corner. However, the suspense of an overtime ended in the 79th minute when Stony Brook's Jennifer Egan took a ball that bounced off a Maine defender in the six-yard box and shot it lower right into the goal. The goal sealed the win for the Seawolves and promised them a trip to Durham, N.H., to take on UNH in the America East Semifinals on Sunday.

Maine goalkeeper Jasmine Phillips saved four shots for the Black Bears while Stony Brook's Marisa Viola saved two shots. Stony Brook outshot Maine 11-9.
