Canuel, Hathorn, Adorno Lead Maine Past New Hampshire in America East Semfinals
Nov. 5, 2004 VESTAL, N.Y.--For the second year in a row, the University of Maine women's soccer team will play in the America East Championship game. The Black Bears earned their second consecutive trip after downing New Hampshire 2-0 in the America East semifinals on Friday afternoon at Binghamton University in Vestal, N.Y. Maine improves to 13-5-1 on the season with the win and ties the school record for wins in a season which was set last year. New Hampshire falls to 10-8-2 on the campaign. "I am extremely proud of how hard our team competed from the first whistle to the end of the game," said Maine head coach Scott Atherley. "Our players fought hard for 90 minutes. It was the best performance of the season and it could not have happened at a better time." Maine held a commanding 12-1 advantage in shots in the first half, but went into intermission in a scoreless tie with the Wildcats. The Black Bears found the back of the net in the 60th minute to open the scoring. Maine was awarded a free kick after a New Hampshire foul. Emily Stevens (Hamilton, Ontario) took the kick and found Marie-Andree Canuel (St.-Jean-Chrysostome, Quebec). Canuel, the America East Rookie of the Year, headed the ball past New Hampshire keeper Lynn Gugliuzza in what would turn out to be the game-winning goal. The goal was the team-leading 11th of the season for Canuel. Maine added an insurance goal less than 10 minutes later. Erin Corey (Winslow, Maine) found Heather Hathorn (Scarborough, Maine) who was able to beat Gugliuzza on a slash in front of the goal at 68:20. For Hathorn, it was her 10th goal of the season and team-leading 29th point. The shutout was the 12th of the season for the Black Bears which breaks the school record for shutouts in a season that the team set last year. Maine outshot New Hampshire 20-2 in the game.
Maine keeper Tanya Adorno (Farmington, Conn.) improves to 11-5-1 on the season with the win. She did not have to make a save in the game. The shutout was the 10th of the season for Adorno which ties the school record for solo shutouts in a season by a keeper. Adorno set the record last season when she also recorded 10 shutouts. It was the 20th shutout of Adorno's career. Gugliuzza made six saves in goal for the Wildcats. Maine will face Binghamton in the America East Championship game on Sunday, November 7 at noon. The winner of that game will earn an automatic berth in the NCAA Tournament.
