Maine Falls Short in America East Title Game
Nov. 7, 2004 VESTAL, N.Y.--The University of Maine women's soccer team fell to Binghamton 2-0 on Sunday afternoon in the America East Championship game at West Gym Field in Vestal, N.Y. The Black Bears finish their season at 13-6-1, while Binghamton, with a record of 14-5-1, earns the automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament. It is the second consecutive year that the Black Bears have played in the America East title game. "It was a tough game," said Maine head coach Scott Atherley. "We put on a ton of pressure in the first half and that second goal really broke our back. They have a great team. They deserve all the credit in the world." The game was scoreless in the 34th minute when off a corner Binghamton freshman Tricia Reed send a header towards an empty Maine net. A Black Bears defender was whistled for a hand ball and Binghamton was awarded a penalty kick. Junior Meghan Taylor, who was named the tournament MVP, kicked the ball into the top left corner of the net to give the Bearcats the 1-0 lead. Binghamton added to its lead with just under 13 minutes remaining in the game. Sophomore Kelly Burnham knocked in a header from close range after teammate Caitlin O'Shaughnessy had sent her own header out in front of the net. Maine enjoyed a 10-7 advantage in shots, but could not solve Binghamton keeper Kristie Bowers, who made six saves on the afternoon, recording her third straight shutout and second of the postseason. Maine keeper Tanya Adorno (Farmington, Conn.) made four saves in goal. She falls to 11-6-1 on the season. Senior back Allison Kelly (Cambridge, Ontario), along with midfielders Angela Clark (Canandaigua, N.Y.) and Marie-Andree Canuel (St.-Jean-Chrysostome, Quebec) were all named to the America East All-Tournament team.
