Pickering, Stephenson to Join Maine Women's Soccer

May 13, 2005

ORONO, Maine-- University of Maine women's soccer coach Scott Atherley has announced that two local soccer stars have committed to attend the University of Maine. Shelby Pickering (Lee, Maine) and Kim Stephenson (Hampden, Maine) will wear a Black Bear uniform next fall as members of the women's soccer team.

Pickering is the state of Maine all-time leading Goal Scorer. Her 178 goals are the most by any schoolboy or girl in high school soccer history. This past fall, she was named to the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) All-American Team and was named Gatorade Player of the Year for the state of Maine. Pickering led Lee Academy to four consecutive Eastern Maine Class D Girl's Soccer Championships. She is a four-time Eastern Maine Class D All-Star selection, three-time All-State selection, and was twice named Eastern Maine Class D Player of the year.

In addition to her soccer prowess, Pickering led Lee Academy to two consecutive Eastern Maine Class D Girl's Basketball championships. She was selected to the Bangor Daily News All-Tournament team four consecutive years, while scoring over 1,000 points during her career.

Pickering is currently President of the National Honor Society at Lee Academy and is Class Salutatorian for the Lee Academy Class of 2005.

Stephenson is a three-time National Soccer Coaches Association of America, All-New England selection. She is a four-time, First-Team Eastern Maine and All-State selection. She was named to the Portland Press Herald first team All-State Team three consecutive years, and is Hampden Academy's All-Time leading scorer despite missing virtually all of the 2004 season.

Stephenson has extensive experience at the regional and national level. She has been a member of the Olympic Development Program (ODP) in Maine for seven years. In 2001 she was selected to the Region I ODP Pool. In 2003 she was named to US Soccer's Super-Y League Northeast Regional and Region I U-16 Select team's. She has also led her club team to three consecutive state championships.

Stephenson is currently a member of the National Honor Society at Hampden Academy. She is extensively involved as a volunteer for many Eastern Maine youth and local charities.

"Having two quality student-athletes like Kim and Shelby join our program is a tremendous gain for our program," said Atherley "We pursued them both heavily and expect them to contribute to our efforts immediately. The fact that they are local products is a bonus. However, they were recruited here because of their terrific abilities and potential to be impact, Division I student-athletes."
