Maine Announces 2006 Women's Soccer Schedule

June 22, 2006

ORONO, Maine-- The University of Maine women's soccer team, which competed in the America East Championship game for the third year in a row in 2005, looks to continue that success during the 2006 campaign. The 2006 schedule, released Thursday, June 22, features competitive non-conference opponents, along with traditional America East rivals.

The Black Bears, who have the seventh best recruiting class in the Northeast and 84th best class in the country according to Soccer Buzz Online, play three teams that participated in the 2005 NCAA Tournament. Maine has seven teams on its 17-game slate that finished at or above .500 during the 2005 campaign.

Maine will have its toughest challenge of the season when it opens at the UConn Invitational Tournament on Aug. 25 and 27. Maine faces Fairfield on Friday and will play host UConn on Sunday. Both Fairfield and UConn played in the 2005 NCAA Tournament. The Black Bears continue with road games against Temple, Canisius and Holy Cross to start September.

Maine plays its home opener on Friday, Sept. 15 when its hosts Marist at 3 p.m. The Black Bears will also host Rhode Island that weekend before returning to the road for games against Brown and Sacred Heart.

Maine opens America East play on Thursday, Sept. 28 at Boston University. The game with the Terriers will be a rematch of the 2005 America East championship game which the Terriers won in double overtime. After facing BU, Maine will play three of its next four games at home against America East opponents. The Black Bears host games with New Hampshire, Hartford and Albany during early October. Maine then travels to Binghamton on Oct. 15, before returning home for the last regular season home game of the year on Oct. 19 against Vermont. Maine concludes the regular season on Oct. 22 at UMBC.

The Black Bears return 11 letterwinners and six starters from a team that went 11-6-2 a year ago. Maine has several top players returning including America East Midfielder of the Year Marie-Andree Canuel (St.-Jean-Chrysostome, Quebec), who led Maine in scoring with nine goals and three assists for 21 points a year ago. The Black Bears also return the services on America East Keeper of the Year Jasmine Phillips (Nepean, Ontario), who was 6-2-2 a year ago with a 0.29 goals against average and a .900 save percentage. She recorded seven shutouts on the season.
