Maine Announces Women's Soccer Schedule

July 8, 2005

The University of Maine women's soccer team, who earned a share of the 2004 America East regular season title and competed in the 2004 America East Championship game, looks to continue that success during the 2005 campaign. The 2005 schedule, release today, features competitive non-conference opponents, along with traditional America East rivals.

The Black Bears, who played in the 2004 America East Championship game for the second consecutive year, have six home games, five of them to be played at Alumni Field in Orono. Five of Maine's eight non-conference games feature teams that finished at or above the .500 plateau a year ago. The Black Bears open the 2005 campaign on Friday, August 26 when they host Sacred Heart at noon at Alumni Field in Orono.

Maine travels to Boston University for the BU Terrier Classic. The Black Bears play Hofstra on Friday, September 2 and Central Connecticut State University on Sunday, September 4. Hofstra and CCSU combined to win 23 games a year ago. Maine plays Holy Cross on Tuesday, September 13 in Portland, Maine, before returning to the road to face Rhode Island on Friday, September 23.

The Black Bears open the America East schedule on Thursday, September 29 when they host Boston University at 3:00 p.m. The Black Bears faced the Terriers in the 2003 America East Championship game. Maine also hosts Stony Brook, Binghamton and UMBC at home this season. The game against Binghamton on Sunday, October 16 will be a rematch of the 2004 America East Championship game that Binghamton won 2-0.

The Black Bears return nine starters from last year's team which finished 13-6-1 and set school records for most shutouts (12), fewest goals allowed (11) and tied for mark for wins in a season with 13. The Black Bears return their top nine scorers and both keepers from a year ago. Linda Consolante (Beaconsfield, Quebec), the 2002 America East Defender of the Year, returns after sitting out the 2004 season as a medical redshirt. She missed part of the 2003 season while playing for the Canadian World Cup team. Heather Hathorn (Scarborough, Maine), Maine's all-time leader in goals scored and points, returns for her senior season, along with 2004 America East Rookie of the Year Marie-Andree Canuel (St.-Jean-Chrysostome, Quebec). The Black Bears also return keeper Tanya Adorno (Farmington, Conn.) who finished 11-6-1 last season with a 0.60 goals against average, a .788 save percentage and 10 shutouts. She holds Maine records for most shutouts in a season (10), career shutouts (20), fewest goals against average in a season (11) and lowest goals against average in a season (0.60).
