Aug. 18, 2008
CAMBRIDGE, Mass.--The University of Maine women's soccer team has been selected to finish fourth in the 2008 America East Preseason Coaches' Poll released on Monday. The Black Bears received 45 points overall in a vote of the conference's nine head coaches. Coaches were not allowed to vote for their own teams. Maine, who has played in five straight America East Tournaments, finished 6-8-3 a year ago and 4-3-1 in America East play. Head coach Scott Atherley returns 13 letterwinners from that team. Among the returnees is All-America East Second Team selection, junior Laura Martel (Lewiston, Maine), who led Maine with six goals last season. Also returning is senior goalkeeper Jasmine Phillips (Nepean, Ontario) who went 6-8-3 last season, and had six shutouts to improve her school-record to 27 shutouts for her career. She finished the season with a 0.90 goals against average and an .816 save percentage. All-America East Second Team selection, junior Anjelica Hodgson (Nepean, Ontario), returns to anchor a defense that allowed under a goal a game last season. For the fifth-consecutive year, Boston University has been chosen to win the conference as it received eight first-place votes and 64 points overall. New Hampshire was second with one first-place vote and 52 points overall. Stony Brook was third with 46 points followed closely by Maine. Hartford was selected fifth with 40 points, followed by Binghamton with 26 points, Albany with 23 points, and Vermont with 19 points. UMBC rounded out the poll in ninth place with nine points.
