Laura Martel Named America East Player of the Week

Aug. 25, 2008

ORONO, Maine--University of Maine women's soccer forward Laura Martel (Lewiston, Maine) was named the America East Player of the Week on Monday for her performance in Saturday's 3-0 win over Sacred Heart. It is the first weekly award of the season given out by America East.

Martel scored three goals to notch her first career hat trick in the victory over Sacred Heart. The game was the 2008 season opener for both teams. An All-America East Second Team selection last year, Martel scored three goals within the first 17 minutes of the game. She is already halfway to her goal total from last season of six. The last time a Maine player scored three goals was Marie-Andree Canuel in 2005.

The women's soccer team returns to action on Friday, when they battle UMass at 4 p.m. in South Berwick, Maine.
