Women's Soccer Earns Playoff Berth

ORONO, Maine--The University of Maine women's soccer team has earned a berth in the six-team America East Women's Soccer Championship. It is the second year in a row that the Black Bears will compete in the tournament.

Maine is currently second in the America East standings, one point behind Northeastern with each team having two games remaining. The top two seeds will advance directly to the semifinals. Seeds three through six will open the tournament with first round games on Tuesday, Nov. 2. The semifinals will be played on Friday, Nov. 5 with the championship game set for Sunday, Nov. 7. The semifinal and championship games will all be hosted by the top seed.

The Black Bears advanced to the America East Championship game last season and finished in a 0-0 tie with Boston University. The Terriers earned the NCAA Tournament berth with a penalty kick decision.

The Black Bears are 11-4-1 on the season and 5-2-0 in America East play. Maine is in a the midst of a four-game winning streak. The Black Bears are led by Heather Hathorn (Scarborough, Maine) who has eight goals and seven assists for 23 points on the season. Hathorn set the Maine record for career points earlier this season and currently has 60 career points. Rookie Marie-Andree Canuel (St.-Jean-Chrysostome, Quebec) has a team-high 10 goals and two assists for 22 points. Erin Corey (Winslow, Maine) has five goals on the season and all five have been game-winners.

Maine has 10 shutouts in 16 games this season. Keeper Tanya Adorno (Farmington, Conn.) is 9-4-1 with a 0.56 goals against average and a .822 save percentage. She recently set the Maine record for career shutouts when she posted the 18th of her career. The Maine defense, led by seniors Allison Kelly (Cambridge, Ontario) and Emily Stevens (Hamilton, Ontario), has allowed just eight goals on the year and is allowing just 5.9 shots per contest. Only twice this season has Maine allowed more than one goal in a game.

The Black Bears return to action on Thursday, October 28 when they travel to Albany for a 2 pm tilt. Maine finishes the regular season on Saturday, October 30 when it faces Stony Brook in Stony Brook, N.Y. Log onto www.GoBlackBears.com for up-to-date playoff information.
