Women's Soccer Well Represented on America East All-Academic Squad
Oct. 30, 2006 BOSTON, Mass.-- The University of Maine women's soccer team was well represented on the America East All-Academic Team announced on Monday, October 30. Marie-Michele Bouchard (Beauport, Quebec), Marie-Andree Canuel (St.-Jean-Chrysostome, Quebec), Laura Harper (Nepean, Ontario) and Jordon Pekrul (Burlington, Ontario) all received America East All-Academic Honors. Maine led all America East women's soccer programs by having four student-athletes selected to the squad. Bouchard was named to the America East All-Academic Team for the second year in a row. She was also named to the 2006 America East Second Team. She has one goal and two assists for four points on the season. Canuel was also named to the America East All-Academic Team for the second straight year. She is a 2006 America East First Team selection. She has four goals and has added three assists for 11 points on the season. Harper was named to the America East All-Academic Team for the first time. She leads Maine and America East in scoring with 11 goals and two assists for 24 points. She is a 2006 America East First Team selection. Pekrul was named to the America East All-Academic Team for the first time. She was named to the 2006 America East Second Team. Pekrul has been a key part of the Maine defense which has allowed just 0.35 goals per game this season. The All-Academic squads are a product of the June 2005 Athletics Director meetings. Faculty representatives and athletics directors from each of the conference's nine member institutions decided to honor some of the league's top athletes that are also quality student-athletes. The All-Academic Team has been selected based on the student-athlete's academic and athletic accomplishments. Academic achievement for consideration requires student-athletes to have a minimum cumulative grade-point average of 3.00 entering the season. Athletically, student-athletes are required to be a nomination on the post-season awards ballot, which is determined by the league's head coaches. Team size for team sports is based on the number of athletes that participate in a contest at one time (e.g., 11 on the field for soccer). In the event that the number of student-athletes meeting the requirements is greater than the number that participates in a contest at one time, all-conference vote totals were used as the tie-breaking criteria. Freshmen are not eligible for the all-academic teams and grade-point averages are taken from the semester prior to the competing athletic season. -U-M-
