Three Black Bears Earn All-America East Women's Soccer Honors

Oct. 31, 2007

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. - Three University of Maine women's soccer players were honored Wednesday as All-America East selections. Forward Laura Harper earned first team honors while forward Laura Martel and defense Angelica Hodgson were chosen for the second team. This is the second straight year Harper has been named to the America East All-Conference First Team.

Harper has had a stellar season scoring four goals and recording two assists for the Black Bears. She was tied for seventh in America East in goals and ninth for goals-per-game. Three of her four goals were game-winners, including Albany (Sept. 30), Binghamton (Oct. 21), and Stony Brook last weekend. She was tied for second in the league in game-winning-goals. Harper also tallied 27 shots and was two-for-two in penalty kicks. Harper is a senior biochemisty major from Nepean, Ontario. She was named to the America East All-Rookie team her in her first season in Orono.

Martel has been a force offensively for the Black Bears this season. She has scored five goals and assisted on another for 11 points. She was tied for fourth in America East in goals and goals per game, with 27 shots. She ranked ninth this season for points with 11 and seventh for points-per-game with 0.73 per game. Martel is a sophomore kinesiology and physical education major from Lewiston, Maine. She was also named to the America East All-Rookie team last season as a freshman.

Hodgson was a virtual wall at the back for the Black Bears. Backs don't tend to get the glory on the box score but the 5'7'' back from Nepean, Ontario even scored a goal and contributed six shots on the season. The one goal was the game winner in Maine's 5-0 win over Holy Cross. Hodgson is a sophomore biochemistry major at UMaine.

Harper and Hodgson were also named to the America East All-Academic Team in addition to their all-conference honors.

The Black Bears are back in action Thursday when the face Stony Brook at 7p.m. in the America East Quarterfinals. The game will be held in Stony Brook, N.Y.
