Ashley Waters Named to Hawai'i Spring Fling All-Tournament Team
March 16, 2008
ORONO, Maine - University of Maine infielder Ashley Waters was named to the Hawai'i Spring Fling All-Tournament Team this weekend for her performance during the week in the competition. The Black Bears concluded play in the tournament on Saturday with a 6-3 loss to Big 12-foe Texas Tech. Maine fell to 0-24 on the season. Waters was named to the All-Tournament team after she hit .400 and belted two home runs during the week. She leads the team in batting this season with a .333 average, while also smacking a team-best five home runs and driving in eight runs. Waters homered in back-to-back games against nationally-ranked opponents North Carolina (Thursday) and Texas (Friday). She went 2-for-4 against the Longhorns with the RBI and run scored. Maine dropped a tough three-run decision to the Red Raiders on Saturday. After spotting Texas Tech a 6-0 lead following the fourth inning, Maine tried to claw its way back in the fifth and sixth innings. The Black Bears pushed a run across in the fifth and followed with two more runs in the sixth on a two-run base hit by Courtney Gingrich. Kirstin Allen and Kali Burnham, a pair of freshmen who reached base earlier in the frame, came around to score on Gingrich's single.
Sophomore pitcher Christine McGivney got off to a solid start and allowed just one baserunner during the first two innings. However, Texas Tech was able to push across all its runs over the following two frames.
Maine returns to action on Saturday when it travels to Rhode Island to face Big East-foe Providence in a doubleheader beginning at 12 p.m. |
