April 7, 2007
STONY BROOK, N.Y. - The University of Maine softball team dropped its doubleheader on Saturday to Stony Brook by scores of 3-2 and 25-0 at the Stony Brook Softball Complex. Maine fell to 17-18 overall and 2-3 in America East with the setbacks. Stony Brook improved to 16-9 and 4-1 in the league. This weekend's three-game series was moved to Stony Brook from Orono following inclement weather which hampered the the Maine campus throughout the week. The Black Bears dropped the first game by a 3-2 score in eight innings. Freshman starter Christine McGivney (5-6) suffered the loss, but nonetheless tossed a solid 7.1 innings by allowing just three runs on eight hits with seven strikeouts. It marked the second-straight start for McGivney that she pitched more than seven innings. She threw 12 innings of one-run ball in last week's 3-1 victory at UMBC to open up conference play. Kristen Calvetti and Kristie Hawkins each stroked a pair of hits, while Hawkins and Whitney Spangler each drove in a run to account for all of the Black Bears' runs. The Seawolves used a six-run first inning and followed with an 11-run second inning in the day's second game to pull out the win. Tara Vilardo went 3-for-3 at the plate for the Black Bears.
The three-game series will conclude on Sunday with a single game. First pitch is slated for 11 a.m. at the Stony Brook Softball Complex.
