Softball Drops Series Finale at Stony Brook
April 8, 2007
ORONO, Maine - The University of Maine softball team dropped its series finale on Sunday to Stony Brook by a score of 6-1 at the Stony Brook Softball Complex. The Black Bears fell to 17-19 overall and 2-4 in America East, while the Seawolves improved to 17-9 and 5-1 in the league. The three-game weekend series was moved to Stony Brook, N.Y., from Orono after inclement weather hit the Maine campus on Thursday. Ashley Waters led Maine with a pair of hits on the day, while Melinda Corssino scored the Black Bears lone run. Freshman pitcher Christine McGivney got her second start in as many days for the Black Bears, but suffered the loss and fell to 5-7. She pitched 5.1 innings and yielded six runs on six hits. Jenna Balent came on in relief of McGivney and pitched a very strong 1.2 innings. She allowed zero runs and no hits while giving up just one walk for her only baserunner of the day. The Seawolves scored two runs in each of the fourth, fifth and sixth innings. The Black Bears tried to battle back and tacked on a run in the sixth. Corssino reached on a fielder's choice and came around to score later in the frame on an error by the Stony Brook center fielder.
Maine returns to action on Wednesday when the Black Bears play host to Boston University in a doubleheader beginning at 2:30 p.m., at Kessock Field. The doubleheader will mark the 2007 home opener for the Black Bears. Admission is free for all home Black Bear softball games at Kessock Field.
