Softball Swept in Doubleheader by Boston University

April 9, 2008

Box Score

BOSTON, Mass. - The University of Maine softball team dropped both games of a doubleheader to Boston University on Wednesday. The Black Bears fell by scores of 5-0 and 8-3 at the BU Softball Field in Boston, Mass. Maine, which had its four-game winning streak snapped, fell to 5-31 overall and 5-3 in America East. BU improved to 20-12 and 7-1 in the league.

Maine jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead in the first inning of the second game. The Black Bears put their two runs up on the board on the strength of Ashley Waters' two-run home run, which raised her total to a team-leading seven this season. Waters' blast came just two days after she was named the America East Player of the Week for the second time this season. Whitney Spangler, who singled earlier in the frame, also came around to score on the play.

However, the Terriers answered with three runs in both the second and fourth innings to pull off the come-from-behind victory. The Black Bears did tack on a run in the seventh on a solo homer by Alexis Souhlaris.

Souhlaris also got the start in the pitching circle for the Black Bears in game two. She pitched five innings, but was tagged with the loss after yielding six runs -- four earned -- on six hits with three walks.

In the day's first game, the Black Bears were limited to one hit in the 5-0 loss. Souhlaris accounted for Maine's lone base hit, while the Terriers pounded out 13. Jenna Balent, who was coming off a pair of convincing victories last weekend in Binghamton, got the start in the pitching circle and suffered the loss. She yielded five runs on 11 hits in 3.1 innings. Cayleigh Montano came on in relief and turned in a solid performance by limiting the Terriers to just two hits and no runs in 2.2 innings.

Maine returns to action this weekend when it travels to Albany to face the Great Danes in a three-game set. The series will begin on Saturday with a doubleheader at 1 p.m., and conclude with a single game on Sunday at 12 p.m.
