Softball Drops Doubleheader to Boston University

April 11, 2007

Box Score

BOSTON, Mass. - The University of Maine softball team dropped its doubleheader to Boston University on Wednesday by scores of 8-1 and 15-5. The games were moved to Boston from Orono due to inclement weather hindering the playing surface at Mike Kessock Field.

The Black Bears dropped to 17-21 overall and 2-6 in America East play. The Terriers ran their record to 23-8 and 7-1 in the league.

Freshman shortstop Kristen Calvetti accounted for Maine's lone run in the day's first game when she drove in Tara Vilardo with an RBI single in the first inning. That run knotted the score at 1-1 following one inning of play. However, BU scored seven unanswered runs the rest of the way to seal the win. Freshman hurler Christine McGivney took the mound as the starter for Maine and went the distance yielding eight runs on 15 hits. It marked the third-straight game McGivney pitched at least seven innings in a contest.

In the day's second game, BU raced out to a 6-0 lead following the top half of the first inning. However, the Black Bears mounted a comeback and pulled within two runs at 6-4 in the second inning. Kristie Hawkins smacked an RBI double, Elizabeth Foltz drove in a run with an infield single, and Vilardo knocked in two runs with a double to account for all four runs in the frame. However, BU scored nine unanswered runs to complete the doubleheader sweep. Starting pitcher Jenna Balent suffered the loss after she worked all seven innings and yielded 13 earned runs on 14 hits.

Maine returns to action this weekend when the Black Bears play host to Hartford in a three-game series at Kessock Field. The series will begin with a doubleheader on Saturday at 12 p.m., and conclude with a single game on Sunday at 12 p.m. The series will mark the 2007 home opener for the Black Bears.
