Softball Splits Doubleheader at Hartford

April 14, 2007

Box Score

HARTFORD, Conn. - The University of Maine softball team split its Saturday doubleheader at Hartford, including winning the first game over the Hawks by a score of 2-1, before dropping the second 5-4. The Black Bears improved to 18-22 on the season and 3-7 in America East play.

Kristie Hawkins and Kristen Calvetti each drove in a run for the Black Bears in the game one victory. The Black Bears went on top 1-0 in the bottom of the second inning when Hawkins led off the frame by blasting a solo homer over the wall in center field. The Hawks tied the game at 1-1 in the sixth, but Calvetti put Maine on top for good in the bottom of the inning when she homered over the left-field wall to give the Black Bears a 2-1 edge.

That was all the run support starting pitcher Jenna Balent would need, as she pitched seven innings, allowing just one run while scattering six hits. Balent, who raised her record to 7-11 on the season, struck out six and allowed just one walk. The victory for Maine snapped a five-game losing streak.

Erin Iandoli was the offensive spark for the Black Bears in the second game, as she drove in three runs, including a home run. Ashley Waters and Calvetti each stroked a pair of hits, including a double by Waters. Freshman hurler Christine McGivney started, but was saddled with the loss despite pitching a solid game. McGivney (5-9) went all seven innings, allowing just one earned run on eight hits, while striking out nine and only walking two.

This weekend's three-game series against the Hawks was moved to Hartford from Orono following inclement weather throughout the week which rendered the field conditions poor at Mike Kessock Field. The series will conclude with a single game on Sunday beginning at 10 a.m.
