Softball Blanks Colby 1-0

April 15, 2008

Box Score

ORONO, Maine - The University of Maine softball team opened its 2008 home schedule on Tuesday with a 1-0 win over Colby College at Mike Kessock Field in Orono. Maine, which improved to 6-34, snapped a five-game losing streak with the win. Colby fell to 6-11 on the season.

Sophomore pitcher Alexis Souhlaris was the star of the day for the Black Bears as she pitched a complete-game, one-hit shutout to run her record to 2-9 on the season. Souhlaris took a perfect game into the fifth inning as she retired the first 12 batters she faced.

In the fifth with Maine up 1-0, Souhlaris posted back-to-back strikeouts to easily collect the first two outs. However, a single back up the middle by Amanda Roehn broke up the perfect bid and snapped Souhlaris' streak of 14-straight batters retired. Barbara Santos followed at the plate and drew a walk to put runners on first and second for the Mules. However, Souhlaris got out of the jam as she induced Meryl Poulin to ground out to the catcher.

Souhlaris struck out 14 on the afternoon while issuing just one walk. She struck out three of the first four batters she faced, and had a string of four-straight strikeouts going before Roehn broke up her bid with the base hit.

Maine got the only run it needed in the first inning. Souhlaris led off the frame with a single through the left side and immediately stole second to move into scoring position. Whitney Spangler followed and dropped a single into center field which allowed Souhlaris to come around to score.

Maine pounded out five hits in the game. In addition to Souhlaris and Spangler, Ashley Waters smacked a double while Kristen Calvetti and Stephanie George each stroked a base hit.

Maine returns to action this weekend for a three-game series versus Vermont at Kessock Field. The teams will square off in a doubleheader on Saturday and conclude the series on Sunday with a single game. Both days will begin at 12 p.m. Admission is free for all home softball games played at Kessock Field.
