Softball Defeats Vermont 3-1

Burlington, Vt. - The University of Maine softball team broke open a 1-1 tie with a run in the sixth inning and added another in the seventh to defeat Vermont 3-1 on Sunday afternoon at Post Field. The Black Bears took two of three from the Catamounts on the weekend, as Maine is now 11-18 overall on the season and 6-2 in America East action.

Maine jumped on top 1-0 in the top half of the first inning. Jess Brady (Jackman, Maine) reached to lead off the game after being hit by a pitch and would move around to third on a sacrifice bunt by Lauren Dulkis (Peabody, Mass.). Brittany Cheney (Abington, Mass.) would then bring Brady home with a single to right. Vermont answered in the bottom half of the inning, tying the score after registering three hits in the frame. With one out Christine Toomey reached on a fielder's choice and moved to second on a single to left by Kate DeForge. A Maine error would then load the bases and with two outs Sarah Toczylowski singled to centerfield, scoring Toomey. DeForge tried to score on the play as well, but was cut down at the plate by Brady in center.

The Black Bears broke the 1-1 tie in the sixth, scoring the go ahead run with two outs. With one out Cheney tripled down the right field line and came in to score on a single to right by Molly McKinney (Byron Center, Mich.). Maine would add an insurance run in the seventh to make it a 3-1 game. With one out Candace Jaegge (Moorpark, Calif.) walked and scored on a double to left-center of the bat of Brady. Jaegge picked up the win on the mound after giving up only one unearned run and improved to 2-5 on the season. Aimee Kern took the loss and falls to 8-5 on the season.
