Softball Takes Doubleheader From Vermont

BURLINGTON, Vt. - The University of Maine softball team pulled off a doubleheader sweep of Vermont on Saturday in Burlington. The Black Bears won by scores of 6-1 and 11-3 in six innings. Maine ran its win streak to three games an improved to 20-22 overall and 5-7 in America East.

Freshman Alexis Souhlaris led the way for Maine offensive in the day's first game as she went 3-for-4 with two RBIs and a run scored. Classmate Whitney Spangler blasted a home run in the sixth inning to also provide a huge jolt of offense for the Black Bears. Senior Kate Joseph added a pair of hits in the contest.

Freshman hurler Christine McGivney got the start for Maine in game one and earned the win to improve to 6-9 on the season. McGivney worked five innings and yielded just one run on five hits while striking out five.

The Black Bears were dominant again at the plate in game two by kicking into effect the eight-run rule following six innings. The big inning for Maine came in the fourth when it pushed seven runs across the plate to overcome an early 3-0 deficit. Ashley Waters blasted a grand slam in the frame to produce a majority of the runs. Spangler, Souhlaris, Kristie Hawkins and Joseph each had a pair of hits apiece.

Jessica Ghazali came on in relief of starting pitcher Jenna Balent following 1.2 innings and scattered two hits over the final 4.1 innings of work to earn the win and improve to 7-2.
