Softball Sweeps Doubleheader at Hartford

HARTFORD, Conn. - Erin Provost (Peru, N.Y.) had six hits, five runs batted in and three runs scored to lead the Black Bears as they take two from the Hawks in America East action on Saturday afternoon. Maine fell behind 3-2 early in the first game, but scored four runs in the fourth inning and went on to defeat Hartford 8-4. The Black Bears wasted no time getting on the board in the second game as the scored six runs in the first three innings and cruise to a 7-4 victory. In the first game, Maine scored first on a Molly McKinney (Byron Center, Mich.) sacrifice bunt which plated Provost, who reached on a single up the middle and advanced third on a Brittany Cheney (Abington, Mass.) single to centerfield. After Hartford tied the game in the bottom of the first, the Black Bears took the lead again on a Provost RBI single. With the Hawks leading 3-2, Maine came back with four runs on five hits in the top of the fourth inning. The inning was highlighted by a Kristie Hawkins (Portland, Maine) double to centerfield and RBI singles from Tara Vilardo (Ticonderoga, N.Y.) and Ashley Waters (Amesbury, Mass.). The Black Bears were able to plate two more runs in the fifth as Provost roped a two-run single. Sarah Bennis (Pownal, Maine) got her 16th win of the season as she went four innings, giving up four runs on six hits and striking out three. Jenna Balent (Conifer, Colo.) relieved Bennis in the fifth and went the remaining three innings, giving up only three hits and striking out three.
In the second game, the Black Bears got on the scoreboard early as they score six runs in the first three innings. McKinney helped Maine take an early lead with a two-run single in the first inning. She later scored on a Elizabeth Foltz (Merrimack, N.H.) RBI single. Maine kept it going in the second as Waters homered to deep left, scoring Provost, who reached on a single up the middle. The Black Bears added two runs in the final five innings and went on to sweep the doubleheader as they defeat Hartford 7-4 in the second game. Balent got the start for Maine and went the distance to collect her 11th win of the season. She stuck out nine Hawks and gave up four runs on five hits. Maine will return to Kessock Field on Wednesday, April 26th at 1:00 p.m. as they do battle against Boston University. Next weekend the Black Bears will play host to Binghamton in three game series, beginning with a doubleheader on Saturday starting at 1:00 p.m. and the series finale on Sunday at 12:00 p.m.
