Softball Sweeps Series from Vermont
April 22, 2007
BURLINGTON, Vt. - The University of Maine softball team pulled off the series sweep of Vermont on Sunday by winning the series finale by a count of 3-2 in Burlington. The Black Bears improved to 21-22 overall and 6-7 in America East. The victory ran Maine's win streak to four games. Maine scored a pair of runs in the top of the seventh to overcome a 2-1 deficit and win the contest. Alexis Souhlaris led the Black Bears at the plate by going 3-for-4 with a home run and two runs batted in, including the game winning RBI in the seventh. Tara Vilardo got things started for Maine in the seventh as she led off the frame reaching base after being hit by a pitch. She came around to score a few batters later on Kristen Calvetti's RBI single to knot the game at 2-2. Ashley Waters, who doubled earlier in the frame, crossed home plate for the eventual winning run later in the frame on an RBI single by Souhlaris. The Catamounts took a 2-1 lead in the fifth inning on a pair of RBI sacrifices. Souhlaris had got the game's scoring started in the second inning when she ripped a solo shot over the left field wall. Freshman pitcher Jessica Ghazali started for Maine and went the distance by lasting all seven innings and yielding just two runs on eight hits. Ghazali has won the last two games for the Black Bears, including coming on in relief of Jenna Balent in the second game of Saturday's doubleheader and earning the victory. Ghazali is now 8-2 on the season.
Maine returns to action on Tuesday at 3 p.m., when the Black Bears play host to Boston University at Mike Kessock Field. The contest is the 2007 home opener for the Black Bears. The game is part of a four-game homestand for the Black Bears, who will also host Albany in a three-game set next weekend at Kessock Field. Admission is FREE for all home Black Bear softball games at Kessock Field.
